The United Churches of God in Christ was established by the late Bishop Marshall Carter (affectionately known as "Papa") and his wife the late Mother Lillie M. Carter as the Church of God in Christ of Georgia, Inc. In 1979, after Bishop Carter was elevated to the bishopric, his vision was for a united church, consequently the following year, he renamed and incorporated the newly organized body United Churches of God in Christ.
Since its establishment 28 yeas ago, UCOGIC has grown into a passionate body of Christian believers who proclaim that by working together, with the help of the Lord, we can. Beginning with an initial seed of just five churches, the UCOGIC has spread across the length and breath of Georgia, and with congregations in Illinois, Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma and Mexico. From a spiritually strategic headquarters in metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia, UCOGIC is poised to reach new horizons through the exemplary leadership of our first elected Chief Apostle and Presiding Bishop Spencer Lackey, Sr.
UCOGIC is a pentecostal holiness body which holds fast to the value of Scripture as expressed in its doctrinal statement. Additionally, UCOGIC embraces the value of women in ministry, vibrant youth involvement and an infectious praise characteristic of a people who have experienced the power of God. The United Churches do not seek to be unique, but rather to be a familiar reflection of the life, work and passion of Jesus Christ.
